Punta Tragara

The Hotel Punta Tragara is located in a stunning panoramic position, just moments away from the centre of Capri. According to legend, many centuries ago, during the period of the great Roman Empire, Punta Tragara was chosen by the Emperor Tiberius as the perfect location to construct one of the magnificent villas built on many of the most spectacular and panoramic sites of the island of Capri.

In the 1920's the eminent Italian engineer, Visamara, following the indications of Le Corbusier, built a villa on the site which, according to the vision of the great Swiss architect, "should be born from the rock itself and form a refuge where to find solace for the body, heart and mind". Notes left in the possession of the original owners by Le Corbusier, describe architecture as the construction of a shelter, anchored to the rock face, from which, with great courage, the honest form of villa Tragara was created: "a house which represents the battle with the rock fought so as to adhere to its surface and insinuate its form into the landscape of Capri". The house is no longer the classic square box positioned on accommodating foundations, but rather a type of architectural flower, growing out of the island; emanating from the rock, like an architectural lichen, born of Capri.

Just before the second world war began, ownership of the Villa changed hands, from the Vismara of Milan to the Marquis Raggio of Genoa. The noble family used their sumptuous island residence as a charming venue where to host high society events and concerts, held in the Salone della Musica. During the war, the building provided the head quarters for the 15th squadron of the United States Air Force. It was here that Eisenhower met with General Clark to discuss the strategy of attack at Montecassino. In 1973, the Manfredi family purchased the building and proceeded to transform the villa in today's Hotel Punta Tragara. Restoration work was supervised by the engineer, Count Goffredo Manfredi. Over the years the hotel has been the subject of a number of improvement programs, which have succeeded in further enhancing the elegant property, whilst ensuring that the original charm of the building remains unaltered.

Today, the Hotel Punta Tragara, complete with outstanding restaurants, two seawater swimming pools, and lush Mediterranean gardens, is one of the finest 5 star hotels on the island of Capri. The Hotel Punta Tragara expresses all the elegance of a graceful patrician residence; its luxurious rooms, sumptuous suites and quiet corridors adorned with rare items of antique furniture and priceless tapestries.

The supremely stylish Hotel Punta Tragara provides the ideal location in which to enjoy a peaceful sojourn. The only consolation for those departing from this unique and very special place, built and conserved in total harmony with the magnificent landscape in which it is immersed; the promise to soon return.
