Palazzo Sasso Ravello
Palazzo Sasso
Hotel Palazzo Sasso is situated in Ravello, perched high up on the cliffs, 350mt above sea level and overlooking some of the Amalfi Coast's most picturesque fishing villages. The building was originally constructed in the early 1200's in a period when Ravello was considered one of the most important towns of the Maritime Republic of Amalfi.
Palazzo Sasso, with other buildings along San Giovanni del Toro, was part of the aristocratic quarter of Ravello during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Some of the building's original rooms are still visible, including the entrance hall and a small bathroom used as a cellar in the restaurant.
The Sasso family, to whom the Palazzo owes its present name, settled in Ravello in the early 1700's. Documents show that Domenico Diego Sasso purchased the remains of the Villa from the aristocratic Bonito family in 1710 and subsequently restored it. Andrea, Domenico Diego's son, commissioned the building of the chapel which is now the lobby of the hotel, in 1756. Andrea died, heirless, just 2 years later. The Palazzo was then abandoned until the beginning of the 19th Century when it was purchased by the Camera family, wealthy entrepreneurs who, following the example of their aristocratic neighbors, transformed the Palazzo in Hotel.
In 1928 the Viullmieur family undertook the management of the hotel. For a full half century, Palazzo Sasso, under the name of Hotel Palumbo, opened its doors to Kings, Queens, aristocrats, poets and writers from throughout Europe and beyond. This golden era came to a close in 1978, when the Viullmieur family gave up the Palazzo Sasso in favour of Ravello's Palazzo Confalone.
In 1997, after a comprehensive renovation program, the Palazzo Sasso opened as a 5 star luxury hotel. The hotel has 32 rooms and 11 suites, all decorated with hand made Vietri tiles, antique furniture, brass appliqués and the finest quality Italian linen and textiles.
The hotel's Rossellinis Restaurant has won International acclaim for its exquisite Italian haute cuisine, including 2 Michelin stars. The wine cellar of Palazzo Sasso houses a stunning selection of the finest regional Italian and International wines. Palazzo Sasso also has a small spa facility for hotel guests with hydro pool, Turkish steam bath, heated swimming pool and open air fitness area. Expert staff perform a range of massages and beauty treatments.
