Umbria's garden of angels

Three reasons why you'll love it here

  1. Hanging out with aristocrats and angels in Bevagna
  2. Snoozing beneath the frescoed cupola in the Arcangelo suite
  3. Roman archeology and Umbrian cuisine in the Redibis restaurant

L'Orto degli Angeli is located in the town of Bevagna, the origins of which date back to Roman times, in the heart of the Umbria region. The beautifully restored historic residence is comprised of two ancient dwellings: Palazzo Alberti and Palazzo Andreozzi, connected by a hanging garden.

Three important families from central Italy have lived in the buildings. The Alberti family came to live in Bevagna in the 13th century. Donna Vanna di Celso Alberti married Giovanni Bianconi and their son Giacomo Bianconi (1220-1301) became a charismatic friar, beatified by the Church. The Andreozzi family came from Rome in the 18th century; they went back to Rome after Gaetano Andreozzi's marriage to Marchioness Maria Vienna Lepri Bernini. In 1788 Nicola Andreozzi sold the building to Carlantonio di Crispolto Angeli Nieri, chief consul of Bevagna, a member of the ancient Angeli family who had been living there since the 16th century. In 1811 Giuseppe Angeli Nieri's son, Filippo, married Lucrezia Volumnia Mongalli, acquiring the title of Count Mongalli for his descendants. In 1686 Abbot Bernardino Mongalli was conferred the title of Lateran Count. Later the family moved to Spoleto, where Tiburzio Mongalli (1754-1801) married Caterina, the sister of Annibale dei Conti della Genga, who later became Pope Leone XII (1760-1829). The present owner of the palace is Francesco Antonini dei Conti Angeli Nieri Mongalli.

L'Orto degli Angeli has a total of fourteen rooms and apartments all of which preserve great part of their original fittings including rare pieces of antique furniture, paintings, and even kitchen utensils and other small items which help to tell the history of the family and lend a special charm to these delightfully comfortable rooms.

In the elegant 18th-century Palazzo Andreozzi there are nine stylishly decorated rooms, each named after one of the Angels portrayed in the exquisite frescoes which recall the family name. The beautifully restored Palazzo Alberti features five unique apartments which contain glimpses of a number of architectural features dating back to Roman times. The apartments are typical examples of medieval architecture and their names, in early Italian, reflect their individual character.

The garden has always been the heart of the Residence, with its delicate wisteria, sweet-smelling jasmin, beautiful clematis and the old-fashioned rose beds all lovingly tended by the family and their friend Helga Brichet. The garden occupies a site which was once the main ambulatory of the Mevania Roman theatre, built under the rule of Emperor Trajan in the 1st century AD, next to the "sacred" area of the old town, where the remains of two Roman Temples are still visible.

L'Orto degli Angeli's "Redibis" restaurant also enjoys a quite unique setting, occupying part of the two ambulatories of the Roman theatre. Here, guests have the opportunity to savor a wealth of innovative seasonal dishes, prepared using only the finest locally sourced ingredients.
