Castello di San Marco Calatabiano

The Castello San Marco, a unique four star resort in the grounds of the Castle of San Marco, is located just 50 meters above the sea on the coast of Taormina at Calatabiano and offers fabulous views of the town of Taormina and the imposing form of Mount Etna.

This stunning castle built in the late 17th century as the country residence of the Prince Ignazio Gravina, provides a fine example of the Sicilian Baroque style immersed in 4 hectares of parkland.

At the time of the castle's construction, the state of Calatabiano had increasing importance as gateway to the sea.
In fact, the complex was to play a vital role in a composite economic system, comprising an extensive hinterland.
Receipts issued in 1690 by the master stonecutters, Francesco and Filippo Flavetta, demonstrate that the original building was built in record time, in a staggering two years.
Over the centuries numerous alterations have been made including the addition of the tong shaped internal stair and turrets to the north east and north west edges facing those already existing on the south side of the building.
In 1697 the Church of St. Antonio da Padova was built next to the Prince's residence.
The chapel can still be observed, although part of the structure has collapsed. The 19th century saw the addition of the millstone and cellar situated to the south of the property, several dwellings for workers, and a high perimeter wall and gate.

The transformation of the property in 4 star resort has ensured that its present aspect is conserved. The hotel Castello San Marco has 30 rooms and a magnificent suite all located in the grounds of the 17th century castle. Guest bedrooms have been tastefully furnished in the "arte povera" style, with quality hand crafted furniture of the finest Sicilian tradition.
The Castle interiors contain numerous traces of the buildings aristocratic past with its majestic halls, graceful arches made from the local lava rock, huge fireplaces and impressive chandeliers.
Sumptuous Mediterranean cuisine can be savored at the hotels restaurants, one outside for al fresco dining and one inside for a more intimate dining experience.
