Three reasons why you'll love it here

  1. The medieval charm of an ancient fortress
  2. The gardens with swimming pool
  3. The stunning view of the Chiascio valley

The Castello di Petroia: where ancient history combines with the charming atmosphere of an elegant relais. A unique location for a luxury vacation, the castle is surrounded by the beautiful scenery of the Chiascio Valley.

The origins of the Castello di Petroia date back to the late 9th - early 10th century, period when the free city of Gubbio was busy building a network of fortifications so as to defend its territory from attack.
A number of historic documents regarding the Castle of Petroia have been identified, including gift deeds dated 1073. 1257 was the year in which Ugolino, Count of Coccorano, submitted the Castello di Petroia to Perugia.
From 1384 the history of Castle is tied to that of the Montefeltro family and in fact it was here, in 1422, that Federico da Montefeltro, who later became Duke of Urbino, was born.

Today the Castello di Petroia has been transformed in elegant relais, the bedrooms and suites of which all recall the romantic atmosphere of times past.
The rooms, characterised by a pleasing combination of old world luxury and the latest in modern technology, are distributed in three buildings: the Castellare Maggiore, the Castellare Minore and the Torre del Mastio, this latter home to an exclusive two-floor suite complete with solarium terrace from where to admire stunning views of the valley.

From the height of its hill top position, the Castello di Petroia boasts commanding views of the surrounding Umbrian countryside. In their free time, guests might easily be found relaxing by the hotel's attractive swimming pool.

Within the walls of the castle there are a number of attractive communal spaces. Accomandugi, Guidibaldo, Mazzocchi, Stemmi and Astrobaldo are the names of the hotel's various public rooms: a reading room, gallery, library, restaurant, breakfast room and halls where high profile business meetings and glamorous wedding receptions are held.

Castello di Petroia lies within easy reach of Gubbio, Perugia and Assisi: fascinating art cities in which magnificent works of medieval and renaissance architecture are conserved. The rolling countryside of Valdichiana and Umbria's Lake Trasimeno are equally worthy of visit.
