The origins of the Castello di Petroia date back to the late 9th - early 10th century, period when the free city of Gubbio was busy building a network of fortifications so as to defend its territory from attack. A number of historic documents regarding the Castle of Petroia have been identified, including gift deeds dated 1073. 1257 was the year in which Ugolino, Count of Coccorano, submitted the Castello di Petroia to Perugia. From 1384 the history of Castle is tied to that of the Montefeltro family and in fact it was here, in 1422, that Federico da Montefeltro, who later became Duke of Urbino, was born.

Today the Castello di Petroia has been transformed in elegant relais, the bedrooms and suites of which all recall the romantic atmosphere of times past. The rooms, characterised by a pleasing combination of old world luxury and the latest in modern technology, are distributed in three buildings: the Castellare Maggiore, the Castellare Minore and the Torre del Mastio, this latter home to an exclusive two-floor suite complete with solarium terrace from where to admire stunning views of the valley.
