Campo Regio Relais Siena - Tuscany.
Historical Residences
Relais Campo Regio is situated in an ancient palazzo right in the heart of Siena, in Via della Sapienza; one of the most important streets of this great Medieval city. In 1392 the street was home to the Studium Senese, the old University of Siena and, from around about 1525, also housed the Accademia degli Intronati; an influential association and meeting place of the Sienese aristocracy.
The theatrical performances held in the Accademia have had a fundamental role in the preservation and dissemination of the noble traditions of Siena. Right next door to the Relais Campo Regio, the impressive buildings of the Studium Senese are now home to Siena's town library, where an invaluable collection of ancient, centuries-old volumes once belonging to the Intronati library are housed.
The historic residence, Campo Regio Relais, is a charming hotel the rooms of which are still pervaded with the refined atmosphere of the past and have all been exquisitely appointed with 18th century decorative pieces and unique items of antique furniture.
The lounge opens out on to the hotel's terrace from where to enjoy a spectacular view across the city, and admire a townscape dominated by the imposing form of Siena's Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral. A superb continental buffet breakfast, enriched with a selection of pastries and cakes, is served on the veranda each morning.
The bedrooms of the Campo Regio Relais vary in dimension and style of décor. The 'Sapienza' rooms all look out on to the Via della Sapienza and are adorned with antiques from the 18th and 19th centuries and Liberty period furnishings. The two magnificently romantic, Empire-style "Camporegio" rooms feature large four poster beds, and beautiful 18th and 19th century antiques. One of these rooms is afforded additional appeal by a private terrace with stunning views out over the city of Siena.
The Relais Campo Regio offers a superb choice of location for those wishing to explore the many artistic and historic treasures of Siena; the Piazza del Campo, where the legendary Palio horse race is held, and the Cathedral are just a short walk away from the hotel. The Civic Museum, which houses some of Italy's most important works of medieval art, such as Simone Martini's fresco "Guidoriccio da Fogliano" and Ambrogio Lorenzetti's "Allegory of Good and Bad Government" is also within easy reach.
The masterpieces of Duccio da Buoninsegna can be admired in the Museum of OPA, whilst a number of 15th century frescoes can be seen at the Santa Maria della Scala Museum. The National Art Museum is home to a permanent exhibition of 13th and 14th century artwork.
