Abbadia San Giorgio Moneglia - Liguria.
Historical Residences - Hotel de Charme
The hotel Abbadia San Giorgo is located in the heart of the historic center of Moneglia, an ancient town characterized by narrow alleyways, porticos, churches and old patrician residences, which nestles in the small bay between the Punta Moneglia and Punta Rospo promontories of the Riviera del Tigullio.
The convent and cloister adjoining the late 14th century gothic Church of San Giorgio di Moneglia were built by Franciscan monks in 1484 and dedicated to St Francis.
In the mid 16th century the convent was restored by Cardinal Clemente Dolera who added guest quarters, an infirmary and a library which once housed over 700 volumes. At the end of the 17th century the ecclesiastical complex was further renovated after which the buildings were left relatively untouched until their restoration and conversion in hotel in 2004; work carried out in collaboration with the Superintendence of Cultural buildings.
The guest bedrooms and suites of the Abbadia San Giorgio Residence are located around the cloister which forms the hotel's charming inner garden. Rooms are not numbered but rather have been given Latin names referring to the places and rules of Franciscan life. The tastefully furnished rooms and suites of Abbadia San Giorgio offer the utmost in comfort and discreet luxury. The Abbadia San Giorgio observes a strict non-smoking policy.
The interiors feature carefully chosen textiles and romantic soft drapes, period furnishings dating from the 17th to 19th centuries, articles in slate and wrought iron fashioned by local artisans and wonderful terracotta floors. The luxurious bathrooms in green or red travertine marble from Verona, have mirrors with exquisite antique frames and modern saunas and Jacuzzis. Room amenities include Satellite LCD television and WI-FI internet access.
Guests enjoy a sumptuous hot and cold organic buffet comprised of home made jams and marmalades made from the legendary Monterosso lemons, cakes and pastries of the local tradition, fruit crepes, organic honey, cheeses and salami.
The refectory of the convent, with an ancient Friar's table, a 15th century slate fireplace and terracotta floors, is now used for the tasting of gastronomic specialties of Moneglia, Portofino, Tigullio and the Cinque Terre as well as a selection of the region's wines, grappa, and fabulous fruit liquors.
